Groningen maakte deel uit van De Hanze, een uit de 17e en 18e eeuw daterend samenwerkingsverband van kooplieden rond de landen aan de Baltische Zee en Noordzee. Stad was destijds een zeehaven: het Reitdiep mondde ongehinderd uit in de Noordzee. Pakhuis Libau aan de Hoge der A herinnert aan de handel die Groningen onder meer dreef met deze hanzestad in Letland.
In the 17th and 18th century Groningen was part of The Hanseatic League, a cooperative of merchants from the countries around the Baltic and the Northsea. At the time Stad was a sea-port: the river Reitdiep flowed out directly into the Northsea. Pakhuis Libau at the Hoge der A was a storehouse that reminds, among others, of the trade Groningen had with the town of Libau, a member of The Hanseatic League in Latvia.
